Obituary for Dorothea Smith (Hoover)
Dorothea E. Hoover Smith, 94, of The Middletown Home and formerly of Q Street, Steelton, died Saturday, October 15, 2022 in the Home.
She was an Instruction Draftsman Apprentice working at the Bridge Shop and also worked on plans for the Delaware Memorial Bridge and the checkered gas tank in Steelton, which expanded up and down. She worked many roles for the Steelton-Highspire School District as a substitute nurse, substitute guidance secretary, and full time instructional aide from the mid 60''s to the late 80''s.
She was a member of St. Peter''s Lutheran Church, Highspire, where she sang in the choir from the time she could sing until she retired in the 80''s. She was a member of St. Peter''s Altar Guild, where she did meal preparation for funeral luncheons and prepared food for the homeless. She participated in the Art Association of Hershey and received numerous awards for her paintings. She was also a participant in the Auxiliary of the PA Pharmaceutical Assn.
Dottie was the daughter of the late Karl and Dorothea Raver Hoover and the widow of Jeremiah M. Smith. She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Finney and husband, William of Hummelstown and Karyl Hawkins and husband, Rev. Larry Hawkins of Steelton; grandchildren, Erin and Levi Blough, Kara Finney and Kevin McCarthy, Thomas and Tiffiney Finney, Karl and Caitlin Hawkins, William Hawkins and Isaac Hawkins; great grandchildren, Maizza, Zayna, Fiona, Kenzie, Carson, and Kaden; a nephew and adopted son, Kenneth Smith; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022 at 11:00 am in St. Peter''s Lutheran Church, Highspire with Rev. Chad Butts, her Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in her church. Arrangements are being handled by Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Oberlin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry at St. Peter''s Lutheran Church, 240 Broad St., Highspire, PA 17034.
